'neubau' by faas van dijk from netherlands
designer's own words:
in my work as furniture and product designer i always try to refer to the dream house i would like to live in and wander around (= my personal ‘neubau’ concept). a house filled from top till toe with authentic things I would like to watch and to use.
the ‘neubau’ door handles are therefore designed with this house in mind and I think they are just beautiful, different enough from what I have seen before and honestly speaking: i really would like to try their firm grip (the handle of ‘neubau’ 1 has the proportions of the ice scraper I use, nr 2 the proportions of a scourer !) and open some doors with them, figuratively spoken of course.
the ‘neubau’ concept exists of 2 basic designs, 2 extensions and some accessoiries. by nature the concept is easy to expand because it is based on a more or less endless play between proportions of handles and shields, which causes a subtle graphic and architectural effect on each door. furthermore I think the drawings have to speak for themselves, even though or just because they are made by hand.
concerning the use of materials i guess aluminium is probably the best metal to work with, because of it’s light weight, a benefit to some of the large sizes of plates.
to create diverse looks and feels I have the following finishings in mind:
- natural mat anodized (most neutral because it’s able to adapt surrounding materials and colours and also because it’s in a way provocative as being used on the most common and cheap standard fittings)
- mat white finish (causes a minimal and more sophisticated effect)
- black iron cast finish (for a rough, industrial look, and honestly speaking; the ultimate would be true iron cast!)
as for the production; I would like blind connections for the shields but standard screw connections are most probably more realistic cost wise
( in general I give as little production specifications as possible out of respect for the expertise of the manufacturer)
