MyShelter by carl julius claussen from norway
designer's own words:
-MyShelter- Because the homeless neither have registered addresses nor their own telephone, it is very difficult for them to get a job and improve their situation. The authorities and the public have no way of getting in touch with them, and they fall out of the social system. With MyShelter the homeless get a mobile cart that offer storage and shelter. The carts are registered at a local MyShelter Centre in the actual city. There they have their registered home address, so they can receive mail. They also have the opportunity to make phone calls, take a shower and charge electrical equipment. The centre can be driven by the local Salvation Army or similar. It is not a large centre, and will not need many employees.
The cart will express something new in the daily city life. It should not express urban grittiness, but be a symbol of homeless trying to improve their situation. Hopefully it will set focus on, and make people conscious of the problem.
The cart comes in different colours, which will make them more individual. And it will also give a stronger signal to the city
The cart aims to be sturdy and easy to use. The body is made of recycled plastic and attached to an aluminium frame. The tent with the inflatable structural system is made of solid fabrics, and is always attached to the cart. It can be inflated and deflated with an air pump. There are no loose or stiff parts that can get lost or break.
The aluminium frame that is connected to the body, makes a rigid system. Small “bike” wheels for better mobility and stability than in shopping carts.
The body of the cart can be recyclable thermoplastic, polyethylene(PE). The back of the body is a room available from inside the tent and trough the door on the other side. The room is lockable and is for storing personal belongings, sleeping bag, ground pad and the deflated tent. The front is an open storage room.
The structural system of the tent consists of pneumatic poles. Each pole contains an inner rubber tube covered by a tough and resistant woven marine polyester. By inflating the poles one get a very rigid tent.
The tent body is made of Polyester canvas and the floor of PVC tarpaulin to maintain durability.
The size of the tent is based on what is absolutely necessary, this will make it easier to maintain a stable warm temperature inside. The door is a regular tent door with nylon zippers.
