Mummy Vessel by marcel sigel from australia
designer's own words:
Materials: 100% recycled HDPE plastic shopping bags.
Tooling: Re-used glass bottles – varying sizes
Dimensions: varying
Essentially a vase in its traditional form, mummy vessel comprises spirally wound plastic, of varying thickness and transparency. Designed to be backlit or lit from within with an LED, the vase transforms into a subtle light form, enhanced by the random pattern of construction. Although extremely light the vase can easily standalone or be weighted by water or sand to increase stability.
The main focus of the design was to change the inherent value of the material being used. It takes the ubiquitous plastic bag, and transforms it into a highly valued designer object. Whilst changing the perceived value of the material the construction technique used ensures the materials original properties are not lost. By retaining the essential look and feel of the plastic bag the design challenges our perceptions of recycled products and the way in which we use them, helping develop consumer awareness about the recycling process.
