designer's own words:

The basic concept was to seamlessly transform a pattern of interlocking letter H's from an additive condition (dark letters on a light background) to a subtractive one (light letters on a dark background) and most importantly, to create a complex pattern with multiple latent interpretations in a refined ‘all over’ design.

To this end, the design team created an algorithm that enabled the delicate transition between states. Recalling the spirit of Escher, the figure ground reversal creates an optical illusion. Unlike a simple repeating pattern the geometry is in a constant state of transformation, celebrating the variation made possible through contemporary computational design techniques.

The pattern can be expressed in multiple ways - either emphasizing the figure-ground dichotomy or just the lines - making it ideal for application as a gradient as well as on solid coloured textiles.
