MONIKIMoNO

MONIKIMoNO by Liina Blom from finland

designer's own words:

MONIKIMONO -create a space for interaction in areas where no specific space of interaction has previously existed.

MONIKIMONO is a design that envelopes more than one user within the kimono:it's meant for people who want to share a moment.
Social media, social networking and community are becoming more and more important in the global community. People crave contact with one another, loneliness and isolation are problems many have to deal with on a daily basis. Combi-kimono brings people to close contact and creates small micro communities. The traditions and history of a certain culture, bring comfort and safety to the people. MONIkimono combines the comforting history to a modern day design. MONIKIMONO is a design that envelopes more than one user within the kimono. It brings people together, connects them and makes them feel safe within their own mini community.

The global community as well as the Japanese community is going through a rapid change. Social media and new forms of telecommunication are taking over the traditional communities and networks. As fascinating and intriguing as these new social paradigms are, people still crave contact with one another. Loneliness and isolation are problems many have to deal with on a daily basis.
The MoniKimono brings back the physical contact between individuals. The MoniKimono is a new method for bringing people in close proximity to one another. In a way, it creates a micro-community. Within these micro-communities, there is the possibility to experience comfort, safety and interaction in a way that the digital world can't provide. This is a real life physical space for interaction, that transcends the digital methods of communication.

The MoniKimono can be taken anywhere, and it can bring together all kinds of users. Events and happenings can have the kimono there to provide experiences and new activities. One can participate in concerts, parties or meetings as a two person duo instead of being alone.

Imagine a park, a workplace or city street, where the MONIKIMONO is situated and anybody can sit there and have a moment together- with a friend or a strager- and communicate.

Manufacturing process of MONIKIMONO is based on traditional Yukata kimono but in the cut there one bigger body part and then there would be only two sleeves for two persons. MONIkimono’s materials could vary depending the place the kimono is used: for the public spaces it could be done with recycled fabrics and for a couple that wants to have a MONIkimono for their wedding it could be done with high quality materials.

MONIKIMONO, a combi kimono can bring together families, co-workes, neighbours and strangers...it's tradition based
but a new way of social interaction between groups and cultures.
