mikko by weinmann natalie from germany
designer's own words:
mikko is a handle with a design articulated around the construction of the object, and its use at the same time. the combination of circle and square in the visual appearance of the handle has several meanings and groundings. the round handle shape symbolises the purpose of rotation of the handle, while the flat, cut off side indicates the rod and mechanism hidden in the centre. but as the position of the handle indicates the act of unlocking and passing through a door, graphics embossed in the rose support the two states of the movement. at first sight the graphic is partly hidden, it is only when the handle is turned that the second stage of the graphics will be fully revealed, indicating the change in position and the resulting unlocking of the door.
colombo is a manufacturer caring for function, perfection and detail, and these elements are central themes in the design of mikko. from our point of view, the door handle is an object which is used subconsciously, in a very automatic movement, as long as it fluently enables passing from one space to another. hence we did not want to change or interrupt this interaction, but mikko nevertheless makes the two stages of opening a door visible to those who will focus on details.
the materials of the handle are brass with chrome or mat chrome finish, manufacturing of mikko is done by using the production methods already practiced by colombo. the graphical element on the rose is embossed, but can also be produced through the play with a contrast of mat and glossy surface.
