designer's own words:
In the fifties, with the introduction of the TV dinner, the vision of the year 2000 was probably one of fully automated food preparation. Today however, living in those futuristic days of the 2nd millennium, we see an opposite trend which leads away from industrialized food preparation, to a more authentic way of cooking with movements such as gourmet and organic home cooking.
I tend to believe that the image of the home in 2020, and specifically the image of the kitchen, is not one of perpetual optimization and automation, but one where new technologies are accurately integrated with traditional, authentic and tactile ways of cooking.
The "Micro Cover" is a sharp departure from the ordinary white box microwave. It functions as a cover which is placed over a plate to heat up the food. The cover has a pressed porcelain top which houses the electronic components and controls. The top handle is constructed of a flexible caterpillar which rotates to set the desired heating duration.
The bottom part is made of transparent polycarbonate molded over a stainless steel mesh which is shaped with photo etching technology. The mesh blocks the radiation while the transparency allows one to easily view the food while cooking.
The bottom part seals against the countertop and has an integrated micro switch for safety.
