Merry Christmas, Mr. Metal

Merry Christmas, Mr. Metal by bm. from hong kong

designer's own words:

Metal is usually cold, in the form of sword and armour, vehicle, spaceship, money, just like winter. Light is usually warm, in the form of fire matches, fire place, light house, city lighting, just like Christmas.
In this project, metal wire is twisted into metal coil and interconnected into a structural system including metal landscape, furniture, column and roof with different transparency according to the radius and separation of metal coil. They hold up together to form a dorm shape space for people wandering, seating, and chilling at bar table.
By twisting the metal wire into the ripple shape, it arises the curiosity of people to touch it. The actions of touching, seating, drinking at bar table create vibration of the structure and glimmer of reflective light. The reflection of light follows the path of the metal wire imitate of snowing which is rarely seen in Osaka and attracts more people to wander around the pavilion.
This project aims to create a complex feeling for people. On one side, the pavilion is cold, strange metal structure that could be interpreted as house, dome, forest, kelp or even instant noodle. But on the other side, it gives people a warm feeling of gathering and a familiar feeling of snowing. Two opposite elements keep reminding people the actual feeling of Christmas.
“A warm feeling in the cold”. I think it is the best description for Christmas, and that’s why I use a title similar to that famous movie.

The metal pavilion gives a complex feeling to people. In one hand, it is cold and arises the curiosity of people. In the other hand, it is warm and attracting people to touch it.

The space underneath the roof is a dome shape. The height varies from 2M to 2.5M according to the depth of roof which creates different spatial and visual experience in the same time.

The metal wire is twisted into coil of different radius for structural support and connection. Seat and bar table are integrated into the column and landscape for structural integrity.

The depth of roof varies to create different visual effect. The reflection of light keeps sparkling according to the vibration of the metal coil to imitate snowing which is not frequent in Osaka.

While the people are touching the twisted metal wire or using the bar table and seating, the vibration keep transmitting to the whole structure to create a slighting shaking effect.
