Master your Mass by SPRINGTIME.NL from netherlands
designer's own words:
A. OUR TAKE ON CURIOSITY
Curiosity is what drives discovery and innovation. This is natural behavior for people, and especially for designers. Our exploration into curiosity quite soon found an angle in creating an itch that not necessarily is best to scratch. This somewhat uncomfortable, wondering feeling we feel is an interesting state of mind for people during the exhibition.
B. STORYLINE
A 2006 study by the Environmental Protection Agency shows that per US citizen, 2 kilogram of waste is created per day. That adds up to 225 million ton for the US per year.
Our concept is built on 3 story lines that support a shared idea about being more conscious of your life decisions and to cherish what you have rather than being a slave to consumption.
Meet your Mass
From Coal to Diamond
Curiosity & Restraint
Meet your Mass
Meet your Mass plays with the idea that a limited amount of material (The Mass) is assigned to every human at birth, and he has to do with it. Because of this aspect of scarcity he needs to be very conscious about how to use it throughout his life.
From Coal to Diamond
Our object - The Mass - is made from a mono-material (Polystyrene). It contains 5 layered seating objects, made from the same material but with totally different techniques and finishes. But you only experience the outer one. The more inward you get, the more upcycled/refined the objects get. From coal to diamond.
Besides its natural resources, every product has a human story attached to it. The products we surround ourselves with are often manufactured under miserable conditions. The man-made diamonds often come from dirty mines. Do we want to buy from these mines?
Curiosity & Restraint
The outer object shows some hints of what is inside. These cues will create a curiosity itch with the user. But peeling off one layer will demolish that layer and render it useless.
Will you keep feeding your curiosity to see what's underneath, and take the risk of an uncertain and possibly undesired outcome? Although in finish maybe more precious, the next layer might be less interesting, beautiful, useful to you. Or can you resist the itch and be at peace with the things you have and your not knowing? Can you master your Mass?
C. THE MILAN EXHIBITION
Since our story is about curiosity and restraint, we don't want to give away everything at once. The show piece therefore will be the 3rd layer of the object, with the demolished rests of the previous layers lying around on the floor.
We will then provide a mobile app that tells the story of Meet your Mass in word and rich imagery and provides more insight to the deeper layers of the Mass.
