designer's own words:
Life in the Dark
Curiosity + exploration = discovery (rewarded curiosity)
'Life in the Dark' takes living organisms from their natural habitat and puts them in an unfamiliar environment. The pendent lamps and vases are hung in redundant or forgotten spaces to create a habitat that supports subtropical orchids.
The idea was informed by the Wunderkammers (cabinets of curiosity) of the sixteenth century.
Explorers' and collectors' curiosity of the outside world resulted in organisms, relics, oddities and objects, travelling across continents to reside in private collections.
The pendant forms are inspired by specimen jars and Japanese hanging plants.
To replicate the orchids environment UV lights are threaded through the wooden cork and are timed to provide the necessary light for photosynthesis.
The root system of the orchid is kept from a pool of water at the base of the pendent vase, which hydrates the roots through an evaporation system.
Growing curiosity in the dark.
