lanturn by Aaron Gray from usa
designer's own words:
LantUrns are a brighter way to store the remains of loved ones. By combining the housing of a traditional urn with the exterior of a lantern, LantUrns illuminate otherwise dark and eerie graveyards. LantUrns also save space by storing remains above the ground while illuminating the areas underneath for walking or other recreational activities.
LantUrns use kinetic energy to update the traditional process of lighting a prayer candle. They are connected to a generator that can be stored in any convenient elevated position and each generator houses a spring that provides a slight amount of tension. When a LantUrn is pulled down from its’ default elevated position, the kinetic energy created by the resistant spring is stored in the generator. This energy powers electro luminescent film housed in the main Zinc Die-Cast shell that stores a persons’ ashes. This energy is enough to stay lit for a few hours. Similar to when a prayer candle goes out, multiple visits to “relight” the electro luminescent film are needed. This, coupled with the Warm Glow provided by LantUrns, encourage friends and family members to visit the deceased.
