Intersection

Intersection by Daniel Swann from uk

designer's own words:

‘intersection’ plays on the relationship the door handle has when the main connection, which leads vertically out from the door bore hole, needs to morph in order to allow for the leveraging and use of the door handle. rather than treating the object as a fluid form, the desire was to embrace the duality formed by this directional shift. the creation of two intersecting rods, allowed for a simplistic and elegant solution to this.

particular consideration was given to the production time scale and manufacturing costs, in order to help shape the design. by using two steel rods, following standardised manufactured sizes; 18mm & 12mm respectively, they are bored out using standardised drill piece diameters; 12
mm and 18mm. these can then be held together by ‘colombo’s’ signature pins or, alternatively m3 grub screws. the smaller rod is then held in place by another pin or grub screw, being slotted into an 18mm steel rod with a 12mm bored diameter hole. all other dimensions were proportioned to fit within standardized door thickness requirements, door bore hole and cross bore hole sizes, as well as latch sizes.

the focus on using standardized parts and simple manufacturing processes, allowed for a an elegant object that also achieves an efficiency and productivity in its adoption for manufacture.

additional benefits rest within options for surface finishing, allowing for an element of customization. the two separate steel rods can be anodized in an array of different colors, allowing for multiple color combinations, as well as the standardized chrome and satin finishes. this versatility allows for it to fit both within a commercial and residential environment.
