The leather (or other material) band would house a flexible ink recipient as well as carbon fiber sheets that, when turnt, would wedge into one another and create a solid hollow drum to hold the pen upright. Alternatively, a chemical reaction between the metal plate and an amorphous substance would render a pocket within the band cristalline and engorge the band once again creating a solid drum.
