Horny tile by leigh wessels from south africa
designer's own words:
These tiles are 2 x 5mm perspex / uhi sheets that sandwhich selected materials like: Chopped cow horn; shells; straw; wood shavings, set in resin. The material between the 2 sheets are held together by a cured resin that comes in many colours. The two submitted tiles are of the Cow Horn inset in resin. I have decided to use this material as it is a free by-product and is usually burnt or thrown away.
I want to make sure that an animal does now become a 'throw-away' item, the way this consumer world is fast becoming. It mirrors finishes like turtle shell but yet has its own unique quality.
I utilise local and rural communities to manufacture / assemble the tiles, hence creating jobs in South Africa, where poverty is still a large factor.
Designwise - the tiles have a high gloss finish, but also have a transluscent quality which gives a wonderful contrast were the eye bounces off the gloss surface, but explores deep and through the tile if it is back lit. The cow horn also has beautiful hidden colours like blue and orange that suprisingly appear at different angles.
