home is where we rest by anna badur from germany
designer's own words:
Almost nothing is as moving as the encounter with death. But still the burial is mostly very standardised and has to follow many restrictions.
Could a burial be more personal and could the scenario of a funeral encorporate the idea the deceased is at a place called home after death? Home is the place where we feel most comfortable and about 90% of the population has the wish to die at home. But being burried at home brings many restrictions and problems with it. So why not bringing the home to the graveyard?
After death we belong to the earth since we are not participating in the living world, “above“ earth, anymore. These urns are supposed to be burried. They are made from soil itself which will be taken from the place the deceased lived on before. So after death the person will be covered with his/her own ground, representing home.
The soil is mixed with a natural bonding agent that will compost once it gets wet. The material allows to shape objects that don't have to be fired by using a pressmold. After a while underground the urns will become one with the surrounding earth and are part of the circle of life and death.
