designer's own words:
“hang back” is a redesign of the clothes valet or valet chair concept. However, the use of furniture for the temporary hanging of clothing,
dates back further than the inception of the valet chair. For this reason, “hang back” can more aptly be called a product redesigned for human
behavior.
Chairs are often used as transitional racks for various clothing and bags. In this way, personal articles not yet ready for cleaning may be kept off the floor for use the next day. This method of organization is not steeped in etiquette but rather reality. A chair at the bedside is quite often the last chance a pant or shirt may have before thrown to their wrinkled fate upon
the floor.
“hang back” addresses the need for the chair to remain a chair. When covered with clothes, the chair cannot be used for its original purpose.
“hang back” allows for clothing to be hung over a second chair back that is held in place with the use of compression springs. When this second chair back is weighted with clothing, the seat and first chair back are left unobstructed and free to use. The front legs are weighted to compensate for the extra load on the rear of the chair.
“hang back” is a modern solution to the need for chairs to be both temporary closets and a place to sit.
