Handled Handle

designer's own words:

space is closed to us until we open it. in order to enter space we must interact with a doorway. handles are a pivotal part in opening doorways. they indicate to us ‘this is an opening.’ our hands are drawn towards handles, as if by their own will, as we endeavor to enter the hidden space behind the door. a relationship exists between ourselves and the handle. through our hands we communicate what we desire. ‘handled handle’ is the result of action.

'handled handle' is designed to emphasize the relationship and impression left in the process of opening a door. the handle is formed in a manner which bears the impression of having been handled by a hand (the invisible made visible).

'handled handle' has developed as a result of a ongoing exploration into interaction with a focus on relationships and value. 'handled handle' is about movement, touch, impressions. this design is an incentive to explore (to open doors). the form is created as a result of a hand gently squeezing a soft material (clay). the rose has been created by rolling a ball between hands and then pressed with the palm. the impression left provides the perfect space for a hand to rest. the form can then be cast in metal. this plays with perceptions of what is hard and what is not - the form appears malleable, but is solid. it is the subtle, but effective, encouragement to enter and embark.
