Hand thinking by pilar pardal march from spain
designer's own words:
A rotary axis, a distance or moment arm and something to grab. In most handles the arm takes on this role. That’s fair.
But, in this exercise, I want to spotlight that part of the handle that is in direct contact with hand. This piece does not have to see its chances restricted by mechanical issues, it just has to be suitable to be grasped, oppressed, depressed, pleasant to hold and fair. It fits into a semi-closed fist and has the shape of its cavity, the way ... to a bar of soap eroded by the use.
Think of wood: natural, warm, nobly aging, even erosion would be interesting in a piece like that. Or lacquered wood, smooth, perfect. Silky ceramic, or glazed, beautiful colours! Metal, enamelled or not; resin, plastic, porcelain, stone... I stand for wood.
We then have to hold that piece at a suitable distance from the pivot, somewhere that invites us to pull down. Curved movement, organic, like those that hands describe, so, curve arm; and, at the end, a concave plate where the oval piece lies waiting to be wrapped by a hand.
