designer's own words:

HALO is a glowing Swarovski Crystal arch which projects a rainbow on an adjacent wall. The projected bow is a full spectrum arc, exactly like those that appear in nature. HALO is meant to be placed on a shelf or mantle and used as a new type of interior ambient lighting.

This work consists of a finely faceted Swarovski Crystal arch coupled with a simple, modern light source. An array of light emitting diodes is placed inside the small, stainless steel base. The base has a thin slit and tubular lens which allow only parallel white light to escape. When this light hits the arch, it is bent and separated into its component colors. The light is also internally refracted inside the crystal arch, lending the entire object a warm glow. In this manner, HALO uses both the aesthetic beauty of Swarovski Crystal and its optical properties simultaneously.

HALO naturally blurs the boundaries between fine art, invention and home décor. This work also mirrors the outdoors/indoors, ‘Crystal Forest’ theme of the new Swarovski retail locations. We in urban settings are increasingly removed from the natural world. HALO is part of a line of my work which seeks to address this basic need. By inventing new ways to use light, we can bring the organic, natural world back into our lives.

Rainbows are the universal symbol of freedom and hope. HALO offers a way to add these qualities to the modern home.

HALO is placed on a shelf and a natural rainbow is projected on the wall. This work is used as a new type of interior ambient lighting.

Internal refraction causes the Swarovski Crystal arch to glow. HALO is small, with a width of 16 cm.
