haat lighting by Parivardhan from india
designer's own words:
The design brief was to explore different materials and techniques and come up with a product.
After exploring different techniques, I worked on the technique of inflation and clustering with various materials like paper/plastics/condoms
etc before i choose SURGICAL GLOVES . I then developed a lighting product because it was very interesting so see the play of light through the latex gloves. Textures could also be developed by using a certain glue and making patterns on the latex gloves.
Materials-
Surgical gloves
Acrylic rod - sand blasted
Small leds/ piped led lights - tungsten colored.
Lighting wire for suspending.
Process-
First prepare the inner core by inserting the tube led into the acrylic rod.
Next fix the suspending wires.
Blow the surgical gloves and tie them by knotting.
a) multiple blown gloves can be tied togther by knotting them together , on the acrylic rod.
b) blown gloves are glued together to each other around the acrylic rod
Product is ready to be installed in desired location.
Other Possibilities of Concept -
1. Installations
2. Seating
3. Wall art
4. Garment
Additional Notes -
Negative aspect - the durability of the product depends on the quality of the latex gloves apart from the sealing technique. Mannually sealed gloves have been tested to endure over a week. But they are not entirely relyable over that period. Improvisation in sealing techniques and change of material can facilitate the solution to this problem.
Also , since the design brief required me to use the technique of inflation to achieve as well as retain form, i was restricted with the materials i could use.
There are a lot of possibilities that can be achieved using this form. The forms are intuitive, intriguing, amusing and can be manipulated to be very symbolic. In my product, it seems as if there are Cow UDDERS in the form of lighting which amuses even the grown ups and brings a smile to their face.
