Fracture by Riley Sanders from uk
designer's own words:
Fracture explores the concept of the refraction and displacement of light as it travels through a solid form and disintegrates along a broken edge. Striking a balance between design and artistic sculpture, Fracture relies on digital technologies and processes to create a form inspired by nature.
The geometric arrangement of facets on the fragmented edge mimic a mountainous landscape through which light shines and casts shadows across textural surfaces. With a transparent core, light travels unnoticed through the solid cast acrylic form and is captured by the faceted surfaces at the other end, reflecting and illuminating in a chaotic and dynamic manner and changing appearance as the viewer moves around the object.
With the use of the LG Display OLED light panel, the light source is able to be hidden in a slim housing at the top of the pendant and base of the desk lamp. The uniform and visually comfortable light produced by the OLED panel requires no additional components to diffuse the output and achieves the desired light levels to complement the natural movement within the form and reduce glare when viewing the piece from below. As well as the elimination of a heat sink, the housing is able to be a discrete component in the design. CNC machined from solid aluminium, the housing grasps the acrylic, projecting light into the transparent form.
Fracture celebrates UK artisans craftwork, benefits from the modern technologies of OLED and creates a sculptural light that is both sculptural and practical.
