DOOR ON KEY by andre gonik from israel
designer's own words:
My name is Andre Gonik and I would like to present to you my “door on key”.
By the end of my informative study in an attempt to execute the task I ran into quite a bit of interesting phenomenon’s which attracted my attention.
the most interesting one out of all of them, In my opinion, was that a big part of the people whom I had conversed with were familiar with the subject and admitted that they don’t even pay attention to it, but they hardly ever touch the door knob in the entrance to their homes.
People come in contact with the entrance to their house’s in average a few times a day, the act of opening the door is such a simple one that it is taken for granted that without paying attention the door knob has no role in the act – all the work is done by the key. A quarter inch of a turn and we are inside.
The main conclusion that followed me throughout the development was that I have to facilitate the operator and not try to dictate to him what to use, however I have to strengthen and justify what most of us do in comfort, ease & practicality.
I have to create and renew the part of the door which we covet – the key, at the same time taking into consideration multiple keys, elegance & ergonomic shape (not too big) while justifying its purpose.
Materials: Polycarbonate shells, rubber coating, aluminum – body mechanism.
Formal inspiration: Car keys, Leatherman and switchblades.
