designer's own words:
This decorative Bowl has been designed keeping the modern lifestyle tastes in mind. Be it for the purpose of fruits, potpurri or mere beautification, - this intricately detailed bowl will surely evoke curiosity and wonder in the eyes of the onlooker.
Design: The design is inspired by an image of an installation made out of stacked broken cups and saucers. The effect is dramatic, intricate and mesmerizing.
Preparation: Muslin fabric is first washed in order to remove starch and about 3-4 layers of muslin have been fused together using a double-sided-fusing. This gives enough strength for the tiny structures to hold. Over hundreds of pieces in the form of circles, squares and rectangles of various dimensions (1cm diameter to 3cm diameter in circles, and max. 4cm length in rectangles) are cut with the help of a laser cutting machine. This helps in sealing the edges, hence, protecting the fabric from fraying. It also gives a subtle burnt brown color to the edges that adds to the over-all look of the texture. Some of the fabric pieces are also dyed orange and green (before fusing), to give hints of popping colors as in the inspiration image.
Construction: The base of the bowl is first created by joining pieces of fabric together, using a basic plastic bowl as mould/reference. This helps in permanently retaining the spherical structure of the bowl. Once the base is ready, tiny fabric pieces are folded, twisted and rolled into desired shapes. Each shape is then overlapped/attached to one another by hand-tucking. The process is continued until the entire base is covered with the texture.
The bowl can be carefully cleaned with a soap cloth in case there are stains. However, it is not recommended for dusty and soiled spaces.
