the prototype for this door handle was made from one solid piece of aluminium. a tube with a 50 mm. outside diameter and 19mm inside diameter was extruded. the section was then placed into a computer controlled metal lathe to produce precise 2mm wide the ‘cooling fins’ of this door handle. by using diamond tipped tools, i was able to achieve a fantastic finish in between each ‘cooling fin’ without the need for additional polishing. the outside surface was polished to a high mirror finish. i understand this type of construction might not be suitable for high production volumes due to the high unit costs of this manufacturing process. alternatively for large volume production, i would investigate further into the possibility of aluminium injection molding to decrease the unit costs.
