New Zealand is the eleventh highest energy consumption per capita, which is 4.53 TEO per capita just above the OECD average of 4.67. Cold climate , a high standard of living , low density of population which means that greater distance are traveled and a large manufacturing base are the factors contributing to the high energy consumption. Energy has become a very important issue in the last few years with lesser rainfall to fill the dam to produce. Electricity consumption has risen steadily since the 1960’s, increasing by about 5,000 gigawatt hours every six years.

The “CUBE” lamp bringing solution to the energy efficiency in lighting and most important thing is to change the habit of energy used. The “CUBE” use a sand timer as an on and off switch depicting the fuel used in the traditional oil lamp, the lamp will go off when the fuel is run out.

To turn on the CUBE user just need to pick up and turn it upside down, just the way to use a sand timer. The light can be turned off manually by putting the cube on its side which will take the sand pressure of the switch.

It is designed without manual switch. It has two cone shape pressure switches inside each side of funnel which connects the two see through polycarbonate compartments. The weight of the sand creating pressure which act as a switch to activate the light which also act as a timer. Light will go off automatically when the top compartment is empty .It will take an hour for the sand to flows through to the bottom compartment. The see through polycarbonate compartment will allows user to see the amount of sand left in the top compartment which will indicate the lights time remain.

The “CUBE” has dimension in 120 cubic centimeters. The form is designed for stability. The “Cube” has equally divided into three sections, the top and bottom compartments are made of polycarbonate connected by a funnel made out of PET which locates in the middle. Three sets of LED lights will be situated on 3 sides of the middle section of the cube. Cube is designed to be simple with less component to make it last, Recyclable materials such as polycarbonate compartment, PET as the LED light casing and the funnel will be used to make CUBE friendly to the environment.
