colombo metromony

colombo metromony by kay van mourik from netherlands

designer's own words:

the metromony concept:

door handles envisioned as tools.
the door handle as a metaphor for a socket wrench.
the metromony concept divides the doorhandle in two separate objects. a wrench that is used to work the lock and a base shaft or nut that turns lock. this conceptual division is visually presented in the design by the use of two different materials. injection moulded plastic or alumininum for the wrench or handle and moulded brass for the base shaft.
the use of two types materials establishes a subtle but exciting contrast.

this contrast of materials can be explored and changed easily by the different color tones and possibilities of injection moulded plastic and anodized aluminum. this gives people the change to let their door handle either blend in or stand out of its surroundings.
it is also possible to easily change the doorhandles appearance when its context changes over time.

the user chooses the the tool that fits best for the job!
