designer's own words:

This project was inspired by the tremendous persevering spirit of the silkworm. A silkworm's perseverance is formed through his anticipation of the future and allows him to keep looking for new adventures, new directions in which to grow, and new lessons to learn.
The cocoon exemplifies the joy of growth and change. At the same time, however, it portrays the fear and trepidation that accompany the history of a silkworm’s fetal movements period.
A silkworm works tirelessly to build its cocoon by spinning a countless number of figure 8 patterns. Its indefatigable spirit is much like that of a monk practicing asceticism to reach nirvana or an artisan who creates a masterpiece by infusing it with his "tamashii" (soul, spirit).
According to Buddhism, the number 8 symbolizes “the principle of the universe” and “attained enlightenment.” Impressed by the the silkworm's actions, I decided to bend the wire into the figure 8 as well.
According to Buddhism, the number 8 symbolizes “the principle of the universe” and “attained enlightenment.” Impressed by the the silkworm's actions, I decided to bend the wire into the figure 8 as well.
The material that i used is a special wire called "jiujizai harigane" that reflects perfectly the amount of power that was used to form its shape. This material has a notably different character from the soft silk made by silkworms; the wire is cold and strong, but I chose to use this wire as a way to express a spiritual form of armor.
This wire also embodies the transformation of a line from its two-dimensional space into that of a tangible object in three-dimensional space. As I bent this wire, I imagined all the scenes as if I were a silkworm dreaming about its future. I felt as though I became a part of the work itself.
