designer's own words:
Our idea and design was based on the cocoon. Death is not the end. It is a change. The cocoon stands as a poetic picture for metamorphosis and the transformation to a spiritual layer, while it is seen as a second skin, to cover and protect the body.
The modern funerals face some serious problems. They are based on the outmoded methods, which do not fulfill the ecological standards of the times. These methods demand dome big amounts of energy and are based on non-environmental friendly materials. Another worrying issue is the fact in of every four cemeteries, the corpse will not putrefy, due to bad ground conditions. The cocoon design helps as move away of the typical traditions, offering a new angle of handling death. Is is fixed in the air and the body putrefies that way for itself, while it reflects the spiritual connection between human and nature.
After the verification of the death, the funeral service arrives.
The deceased body is positioned comfortably in a polylactical (PLA) plastic form. It is non-transparent and white colored. It will later take the shape of it, letting though space for an air layer.
The funeral service carries the deceased person on a bed covered with moss.
The bed is placed in the special designed auto, which is also inspired of cocoon forms and fulfills all the ecological standards.
After the required procedures the funeral ceremony takes place in a built space of amphitheatrical shape. The ground will be covered by green textile, with some embedded seat cushions.
The background of the stage is covered by a surface, which can be projected and adds an atmospheric mood in the space.
There is a free organization where and how everybody takes place.
In the middle of the stage is situated a wooden construction on which the deceased person is placed. Its shape is formed by three stripes and it is inspired of the cocoon form.
The relatives experience the last goodbye through a performance, which leads to the final transformation of the deceased person. The whole technical procedure is done with special resin guns. In the beginning of the webbing process a membrane is formed. A coating process follows and in the end a varnish layer is added.
Every cocoon is unique. It is sculptured in a different way, based on each ones body. The shape the design and the color can be chosen on preference.
During the ceremony, it is possible that the pictures and the beautiful memories are projected on the surface back of the stage.
After the ceremony the cocoons are installed in the cemetery. It has a similar look to a greenhouse and it works like a bottle garden. A bottle garden is a container of glass or plastic bottle, similar to a terrarium. Plants are grown inside, with little or no exposure. It is an example of a miniature ecosystem. The essential requirements of the bottle garden are substrates, plants, microorganisms, air and water. Also helpful is a drainage from flatulence. The carbon dioxide from the plant respiration is used for photosynthesis and the oxygen from this procedure is used for respiration. This means no maintenance is required. Possible locations of these cemeteries are low exposed light spaces. The relatives have the opportunity to go inside the cemetery, where an enjoyable atmosphere is installed in a tropical garden.
The cocoons suit with the cemetery's environment. A special pipeline attached to the cocoon, allows an air circulation, which make the putrefaction possible. In addition, on the bottom of these pipes, an oder filter is fixed.
Seat cushions are placed through the garden were visitors can relax.
After some years, as the full putrefaction is complete, the cocoons are placed together with the tropical garden waste in a compost. The compost can be used as a fertilizer or ground of a future cemetery of this kind.
