Co-Playground by Shiyao Chen from china
designer's own words:
Co-playground is created for kids by a designer and community residents. All the facilities and toys come from household items people don’t need at home and other abandoned things. The inspiration comes from children playing on the street in 70s America. Through street play, children applied their powerful imaginations to the environment, making use of anything they picked up in abandoned buildings. A pile of trash might be a source for treasure. Today children have opportunities to see and experience various things. However, they play too much electronic devices rather than playing outside. Lack of resources did not restrict children’s imagination and ingenuity in the past, while today’s excessive materialism might slowly swallow their innocence and creativity. To protect these valuable characteristics, let’s return to the original ways of playing.
The playground is environmentally-friendly yet playful. The useless items can be the best toys after upcycling. Concrete pipes become secret bases. A broken bucket makes a basketball hoop and cans make balls. An old wardrobe makes a magic closet.
Children play crazy yet learn a lot in Co-playground. No kid will not like such a special and unique paradise and this place stimulates children’s imagination and creativity. More ingenious toys and new games appear in this paradise, created by the kids playing here.
Co-playground makes a paradise for children in this community yet helps build a heathier community. The young and old all make an effort to the playground construction, contributing to a harmonious community.
