Cluster

Cluster by Henry Caird from new zealand

designer's own words:

‘Cluster’ completely transforms how we interact with a desk lamp. Formed around the concept of personalisation; the user has the ability to create unique and unusual shapes. The intensity of light can also be controlled through the physical action of stacking. When each metal plate comes in contact, light is shared between the components. Cluster provides a playful experience, adding character to any desk.

Cluster evokes curiosity through its manipulation of light, along with its physical ability to be manipulated as a product. The user is left curious towards finding out what lies between the gaps. How is this object constructed and where is the light coming from?

The centrepiece is the heart of the design, connecting the pipes and faces together. Wires run through the pipes, allowing the electronics to be linked from one end to another.

Cluster portrays a luxurious and technological image, through its refined exterior shell to its innovative interior. It is completely digitally fabricated using 3D printing, PCB milling and water jet cutting. Materials consist of translucent ABS plastic, sandblasted galvanised steel sheet, neodymium magnets and PCB boards with surface mount LED’s and resistors.
