Ceramic Tiles with Glaze by from
designer's own words:
These tiles are made from ceramics, and took about a year to design and produce one set.
I had become fascinated by the tesselations and patterns found in islamic architecture, specifically the tiles. I designed these completely from scratch, not useing an existing design as a base. My first avenue of exploration were stars, and i tried many variations. Looking at the negative space between them, I started to come up with the rough shape seen above (at the bootom of picture two). Having sketched the shape, I moved onto the computer, and using Illustrator (Image one), ensured that all the angles were correct and that all shapes fitted together. I made the actual pieces from ceramic by rolling the clay into slabs and using templates cut from acrylic, cut out the appropriate shape. I started with the 'main' pieces, and then added the centre (blue) bits and the small gold squares to fill the space and to give added contrast to the colours. there are also 'half' main pieces, that give the tiles an edge, rather than having them tesselate for ever.
While these tiles are purely decorative, the materials used are extremely durable, and can handle even the rigures of being stpped on, and could be used as part of a floor - as a centrepiece of a room, perhaps. MOrelikely, due to the bright colours, could be to simply have them in a garden, surrounded by plants. due to the nature of the design, these tiles could be used anywhere, so long as weight is not an issue.
