The Caustic Lamp is result of a study on how light refracted by 3D shapes could produce ornamental 2D patterns.

In the center of the lamp is located a light source surrounded by an exchangeable refractor. The spherical translucent shade of the lamp serves as a projection screen for the caustics generated by the refractor. All of the components are attached to a central tube which serves as a path for the power cord.

With refractors with various shape the light can produce organic forms and incredibly complex geometric patterns. By changing the refractor the user can easily completely transform the look of the lamp and explore the amazing patterns which the light creates.

All of the renderings are produced with a physically accurate ray tracing engine, which means the lamp will look like them in real life.

The spherical shade can be produced from all kinds of translucent materials like frosted glass, methacrylate or polycarbonate. The refractors can also be manufactured from any kind of transparent material. The whole lamp could be made of 100% recycled or recyclable materials. With today’s LED technologies it can be very energy effective.
