In an increasingly urbanized world how can manufacturing be integrated into living cities?

Curiosity about this question led us to develop a mobile aluminum foundry for the streets of São Paulo. The foundry runs on waste vegetable oil and discarded aluminum cans and is operated by an existing system of waste collectors known as 'Catadores', who mine the streets for materials to produce a series of products with a strong vernacular aesthetic.

The project creates a self-sustaining system that makes use of free metal and free fuel to produce an infinite range of individually crafted aluminum items cast on demand. The set up can be replicated in cities around the world.

For Lexus design award in Milan we will build a mobile 3D printer to build sand moulds with greater detail and complexity. Using a printer spraying glue to bind the sand, the printed structures will then be used to form moulds for the molten aluminum. For Milan we will exhibit the sand printer alongside accompanying printed sand moulds and cast Aluminum objects.

Where the large majority of carbon footprint of products comes from the transportation of goods rather than their manufacture the mobile furnace recycles waste into products locally according to demand, drastically reducing carbon emissions and creating an industry that is integrated into the living city.
