For its main productivity, Marrakech, Morocco relies on the industry of farming, textile, entertainment and raising camels. Nevertheless, it is hard to identify which areas are appropriate for farming or entertainment because the district is mostly covered in sand.
According to statistics from Marrakech, 15% of the area is about 56,852 ha. It has already become desertified because of water shortage, a harsh climate and continued drought. These conditions make citizens’s life more problematic and also influence the ecosystem balance of the region.
Project Narrative:
Subject to periods of flooding and drought by lack of rainfall, Marrakech’s landscapes are places of continuous evolution, erosion and sedimentation. Transient procedures leave permanent markers and reminders: Mountainscapes, scarred river banks and terraces by agricultural fields.
Living with the Wadi Issyl, Marrakech’s largest river, plunging into the Atlantic Ocean, the decomposition of mountains into valleys and water continues- that is the process of erosion: of death and decay, a variation in state, duality in the motionless and the moving.
The idea comes from the quote ‘Everything is a ruin in process and a ruin is a melancholy marker of the passage of time in both directions.’ (The Timeless Art of Light and Form, Louis Kahn)
A landscape design that observes and records changes in natural phenomena within the site context:
Camel farm
1. Camel/camel breeding with a linear planning along from south to north
(May need to adjust the width of the water channel)
Linear Grassland/ Race
2. Camel / Camel race along the river
(May need to create subterranean under the urban site, aims to differentiate the land use before flooding and after flooding)
Culture Preservation
3. A monumentality and memory (Framing structure)
(An idea that to observe the natural power such as Air well condenser water/solar/wind energy)
4. Increase the size of Flood Plain
5. Wetland
6. Urban mobility, Camel station, Camel mill and walk (From south to north)
(Cantilever over the river)
(P.S Camel's diet is made up of hay, Camel’s diet is the desert food, plants, and sometimes bugs or even the dirt)
Existing problem: Economic, Agricultural production, Population growth, Water and Energy Problem, Flying Electric Generators will be adopted
Camels can benefit to the agriculture field and urban connectivity, thus agriculture field and urban connectivity will be improved in Marrakech and bring a certain positive effect to local as well.
