Braille Door Handle by tonya sweet from united arab emirates
designer's own words:
the door handle is designed with geometrical shape with various angles, yet it is ergonomic. the form starts complex at the rose connection and it unfolds and simplifies as it reaches the surface where the hand is in contact. the contact between the hand and the door handle occurs when the tips of the fingers feel the tactile expression of the inner most surface which has Braille letters extruded on it. the braille words express the function of the room whether it is a bathroom, bedroom … etc. the braille is intended to be hidden at the back side of the door handle. it is only when the tip of the fingers touch the inner surface, where a person realizes the braille’s existence. The braille letters are positioned in a mirrored and rotated way to allow the blind to read from left to right on the inner surface. this door handle could be utilized for both interior doors and for exterior doors with possibility of including other braille words on its surface. the material proposal is shiny, reflective and smooth metal (aluminum or chrome). aesthetically, this will create a contrast between the angular surface and edges and the smoothness of the surface.
