designer's own words:

“Cool” and “Chill” is the theme that I have used to base my design on. Furniture for teenagers has to be “cool” and it should provide a means for them to “chill”.
Boin is simply a stool that doubles as an ambience light when it is not seated on. The stool combines two simple elements, a sphere and a cube, into an iconic piece, with the sphere looking as if it is “bouncing” within the cube whenever someone sits on it.
Other than being fun to look at, the sphere also acts as the switch for the LED light hidden within it. Every time a person sits on Boin, his weight compresses the spring within the cube and the sphere is pushed down. In turn, the contact between the connection wire and the power base is cut, resulting in an “open” circuit and causes the LED light to go off. Once the person stands up, the spring pushes the sphere back up and the contact between the connection wire and the power base is made. “Closed” circuit is achieved and the LED light comes on. A capacitor is placed within the circuit to provide a time delay and make the sphere glow gradually when the person leaves the seat, bringing up the cool factor.
LED light is used as it is a cold light and will not heat up. The sphere is made of durable ABS plastic because ABS is transparent and strong. The upper portion of the cube is molded out of resin while the bottom half is made of reinforced fiberglass. Dimensions for the cube are 400 x 400 x 300mm and the sphere has a diameter of 200mm.
The “bouncing” sphere and the simple form of BOIN provide a cool and fun space for teenagers to chill and unwind…
