designer's own words:
The problem addressed is teens living in small spaces- be it sharing a room with siblings, dorms, or just cramped quarters. The goal for this piece is to appeal to teenagers while being fully customizable, as well as eliminating wasted space.
The piece appears to be one large rectangular box unit standing about 81" tall. The side panel (each approx. 21" wide) folds down creating a worksurface for homework, etc. The back panel (about 41" wide) is anchored to a wall for stability, and the front panel folds down to reveal a twin sized mattress.
Customization comes in the form of 19" square panels that can be "plugged in" to each side via a 4.5" hole pattern.
Assembly would be fairly easy due to few parts and may possibly be done in the home. Material for the main unit would most likely be wood with vaneer but other possibilities may exist.
Panels could be a wide range of materials including clear plastic for photo or poster display, magnet board, cork board, a wide variety of colored panels, or others less conventional plug-in panels such as a chess board or even dart board.
Key features of this piece include conservation of space and materials through one integrated piece, and simple, easy customization.
Customization is key to teenage furniture design because of a teens want to be independent and individual. This piece satisfies these needs.
