BATON by simon enever from usa
designer's own words:
the combination of two principles, baton was born from the desire to create a simple but clever personalise-able door lever which also tried to step away from the traditional right angled connection between the door lever and the rose/ spindle and allowed the lever to appear to be floating freely on its own and allow the user to truly appreciate the pure state of the material chosen for the rod shaped lever section. The unique rose design allows the assembly of the lever and connector to the spindle using just one screw and hiding away the intricate and intriguing detail which secretly attaches the lever to the rose.
Far too many door handles focus on creating never before seen, organic shapes for the lever, when the simple rod shape is often the most comfortable and desirable. This is aother reason why the neglected Rose area of the door handle was focussed upon.
The Rose and connection parts of the handle are manufacturing using traditional handle making techniques such as casting and machining, while the replaceable lever rods can be made from almost any material, such as cork, antimicrobial copper or even rubberised plastics as the extruded cylinder is almost completely pure but for a single machined hole to allow for attachment to the handle. This cuts down greatly on manufacturing costs and material wastage and also allows any damaged levers to be 100% recycled after their life.
The overall aesthetic of the handle is meant to be simple and approachable in order to attract as broad a range of users as possible, with the knowledge that they can customise the most prominent part of the handle, the lever, to whatever they desire.
