ARCH by MDBA from spain
designer's own words:
We aimed to predict the necessities one has in case of any type of humanitarian crisis. The most evident future tendency in the society is migration. Many times people relocate by their own decision, but even more times it is a necessity. There are approximately 45.2 million people around the world who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. At least one of them third are considered refugees, people who are forced to take up temporary residence in often inadequate structures with limited access to basic human needs. We decided to develop a design that could help to provide one of those necessities – a shelter.
The ARCH is a system of structural elements that is designed to be used in the moment of emergency situation, where temporal housing or facilities are needed. It is a modular system of arches and beams that can be used to create an individual space, as well as big multifunctional structure. The angular shape is a modern interpretation of one of the oldest structural elements. ARCH is made from fiberglass; it is light, easy to transport and to assemble. We suggest that constructed volume would be covered by tarp, textile or vinyl depending on their interior function. The measurements of the arch would be 225*225cm, enough for a person to stay standing up as well as lay down. The horizontal beams appear in height of 75 cm and 150 cm, creating possibility to fix surfaces that could be used as tables or beds.
