antimicrobial door knob by saikat biswas from finland
designer's own words:
Although silver's disinfectant properties has been known to mankind since ancient times and the antimicrobial uses of silver have largely been supplanted by the use of antibiotics, the use of pure silver common people has just been limited to jewelry and other accessories.
The idea of this concept is to open an avenue to create objects which closely encounter with users, focusing on effective utilization the antimicrobial properties of silver.
Door knobs/handles are infamous for spreading contagious deceases. As they are used by multiple users the infectious deceases spread from one to another through the knob.
The door knob in this concept has elements with silver layer around it. When someone uses this knob, her/his finger slides over the textured silver elements. If there is any germ it would be destroyed by the silver reducing the chance of infection.
Although the functional use of the texture is to enhance the contact with finger but it also adds to the look and feel of the knob. Just by changing the texture the look and feel of the overall design could be dramatically customized.
