designer's own words:
the door handle design follows from questioning on ergonomics, materials, and engineering. the handle has a hollow, round core, beginning with a small diameter and thick wall near the rose and then increasing in diameter and decreasing in wall thickness as it reaches the point of contact for the hand. the larger diameter strengthens the handle in twisting and bending, and the wider arc comfortably meets the palm. the increased strength of the wide diameter section not only allows thinner walls but also allows material to be removed from the bottom part of the handle, creating a design with a fluid look and the impression that air could flow easily through the handle. the handle is intended to be manufactured in metal.
