A moment in time by Renadmhussein from united arab emirates
designer's own words:
Each day of our lives is filled with anticipation. The expressions ‘I am really looking forward to…’, ‘have a great day’ & ‘have a great evening’ gives evidence to the anticipation in each day of our lives. Take away the anticipation of what the future my hold, and there is nothing to look forward to, nothing to live or fight for. Anticipation is not a thing you can describe or an object you can hold, it is feelings and emotions; it is a special moment in time. Anticipation makes us feel differently about time.
We live our lives in anticipation of what the future will hold for us, we are always anticipating for things to happen and somehow we forget to live and enjoy the moment and we are always running for next hit, it is like a rush, a living roller coaster ride.
So in my design I want to create awareness about time and appreciation for each moment in our lives. By capturing the essence of a moment in time.
So I decided to design an hourglass floor lamp, the hourglass is a reminder of whatever you happen to be going through it will pass, as change is inevitable. The hourglass symbolizes the balance of the universe and it symbolizes the enteral passage of time, the sand slipping away until there is no more, and therefore a continual reminder that life is finite, and that therefore we should make the most of it while we can.
The idea of the design it is simple, you turn the lamp upside down, and just like an hourglass, the sand in the lamp will slowly fall. As the sand falls through, it will cover up the lamp and the light inside the hourglass lamp will get dimmer and dimmer, and when all the sands has fallen, the weigh of the sand will trigger a sensor that will automatically shut off the lamp, so the user will know that 1 hour passes. And if you want to switch it again you have to turn the lamp upside down. And that will create a human interaction with the lamp; and that will lead to create a user connection and a greater awareness of the value and finite source of light energy and time.
I have not decided yet about the materials I am going to use. I am still under exploring and experiment, I am thinking to use either wood or stainless steel for the support. And for the lamp I am either going with glass or 3d print clear resin.
I am looking forward to be part of the Lexus design award. And I’m anticipating hearing from you.
