A boundary with habits by satoruosawa from

Background
We propose a new way of boundaries. In our immediate vicinities, there are boundaries that connect to different spaces, such as windows, curtains, and doors. Our proposed “boundary” has the “habit” of moving interactively for humans. With boundaries possessing the potential to move, the very act of moving past that boundary will itself possess a special meaning. With boundaries, there will be someone that observes its movement, someone that plays with its movements, and someone that will hesitate to move past the boundary itself. In this way, because the affordance of “habit” which things possess is so strong, if used appropriately, it means that it is possible to effectively afford a human’s behavior. This proposal is a prototype for a new way of boundaries, and testers will be able to experience the possibility of designing a habit.
Process
First, in order to learn the key points of actuator movement, we created several movement samples. The creation of each sample was carried out over the span of 1-3 days, and places emphasis on quantity rather than accuracy. By actually having people experience the samples, it was possible to feel their potential to surprise people or make them have an attachment to it.

Among those samples, we focused on the power held by the habits of movement, which have lead to the current creation.
Materials
Materials include elastic fabrics and nylon thread. And by using the nylon thread we’ve designed samples so that the fabric spreads out evenly.
