Yves Salomon x chapo creation at 2024 Paris Design Week

On the occasion of the 2024 edition of Paris Design Week, fashion brand Yves Salomon pays tribute to the innovative work of French furniture designer Pierre Chapo through a new collaboration with Chapo Creation. Previously exhibited at the 2024 Milan Design Week, the series features limited-edition pieces, including a day seat, a sculptural chair, a lampshade, an ottoman, and an armchair, inspired by Chapo’s iconic designs, reimagined with intarsia of upcycled shearling scraps.

In addition to unveiling these collaborative creations, Yves Salomon also offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship behind the scenes, showcasing the expertise of its artisans. Last but not least, the Maison presents an exclusive selection of original Pierre Chapo pieces from the private collection of Yves Salomon and Tamara Taichman.

Celebrating Pierre Chapo’s Legacy

The Parisian design house has reimagined five of the most iconic pieces by French designer Pierre Chapo, presenting them in a new collection highlighting their shared commitment to craftsmanship. The collaboration marks the first time that Yves Salomon ventures into furniture design, blending its expertise with Chapo’s legacy. The result is a unique series that fuses Chapo’s timeless wooden furniture with upcycled shearling scraps, bringing together two distinct worlds of design—furniture and fashion—in a harmonious dialogue.

Pierre Chapo, a revered figure in French interior design, is known for his innovative use of wood, particularly elm, oak, and ash. His minimalist yet functional creations, such as the S15 armchair and the L01 bed crafted for Samuel Beckett, have left an indelible mark on 20th-century design. Chapo’s work, characterized by simple lines and a deep respect for natural materials, has been celebrated worldwide and continues to be produced in limited editions. This collaboration with Yves Salomon’s design house brings new life to Chapo’s pieces, merging his wooden craftsmanship with the soft, tactile elements of shearling and leather.

A Fusion of Woodwork and Shearling in Five unique Pieces

The collaboration resulted in the careful selection of five pieces, including the lesser-known D10 balanced arm lamp and the S10 armchair, also known as the Sahara. Originally crafted in Chapo’s workshops in the 1960s, these items have been reimagined in Yves Salomon’s Paris atelier. By incorporating shearling and leather into the designs, the collection unites Chapo’s woodwork with Yves Salomon’s expertise in intarsia, creating unique pieces that are both elegant and functional.

To achieve this, scraps and vintage pieces of animal origin were carefully selected and then mixed and matched based on their unique colors and textures. This process results in an entirely handcrafted, invisibly stitched puzzle. Each ‘furniture outfit’ becomes a truly one-of-a-kind piece, meticulously designed to fit every surface, shape, or curve perfectly. The soft contrast of the materials against the solidity of wood brings together beauty and durability in harmony.
