WUUX installs rotating cyberpunk tower inside chinese concept store

WUUX’s machine installation at the zhima health shop challenges typical retail spaces

within beijing’s zhengda center, the zhima health concept store has recently been fitted with a spellbinding machine installation. looming in the middle of the shop like a cyberpunk tower, the structure comes to life under the enchanting blue lighting that floods the interior. 

designer wang yong from studio WUUX completed the installation to challenge traditional retail spaces. inspired by automotive engines, he borrowed the logic of power transmissions from supercar seats to create a perpetually moving machine that echoes human body and life dynamics in an unapologetically dystopian manner.

a cyberpunk steel tower nodding to traditional remedies, replenishment, and natural cycles

joining hands with shanghai bringidea art design, wang yong from WUUX (see more here) combined his automotive inspiration with the practice of traditional chinese medicine and the five elements theory describing the interaction between earth, fire, water, air, and wood. specifically, he translated the ideas of ‘replenishment’, ‘health’, and ‘cyclical life’ into a futuristic tower that keeps on moving. 

the installation comprises three groups of transparent rods, three transmission motors, and a brass mechanic wheel — all connected by a stainless-steel structure. vertically occupying the steel tower are five types of traditional chinese remedies placed in glass tubes. programmable LED lines emit their light from the rods that revolve on their axes at various frequencies — giving birth to a machinic entity of unlimited power through extraction, transmission, replenishment, and cycle.
