the world’s biggest publicly funded project to make transport fuels from algae will be launched today. carbon trust,
a government agency which develops low-carbon technologies, is working towards finding environmentally and
economically sustainable alternatives to oil for the transportation industry.

transport is responsible for one-quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions, so it is a major priority that the government find a way to reduce emissions by 2050. algae produces various chemicals depending on the type of species it is and the conditions in which it grows. scientists hope to find strains of algae which they can use as fuel, replacing petrol and diesel. carbon trust would like to produce algal biofuels commercially by 2020.
