dutch designer willem heeffer presents the ‘boiler lamp collection’ as the first element of his larger explorative project: ‘the city as a mine’. primarily centered around research and up-cycled design methodology, the work looks to identify and make use of various residual items gathered from factories in the helsinki, finland area. his determined goal is to not only develop a series of interior objects, but also to create an extensive catalog of information about industrial waste materials, including specific properties and production methods.

the ‘boiler lamp collection’ is comprised of pendant and floor lamps made with boilers from discarded espresso machines. after years of producing coffee — materials were sourced from the paulig coffee factory — the metal pieces are retired, and now, reinterpreted as small batch lamps.

each unit is tagged with the name and serial number of the original machine. heeffer gives every lamp a fresh, matte powder-coat exterior, which contrasts wonderfully with the shimming factory finish interior. light shades are made by heeffer, measuring 18cm in diameter and available in various thicknesses. the light fixtures are playful, engaging objects that exploit the engineered perfection of piping to emit their unique light and characteristics.
