in the current anxious climate of the coronavirus pandemic, studio 5•5 has created a social distancing signage system within the city of paris, france, in order to help pedestrians navigate safely through the streets. the colorful, friendly signs remind parisians, in a poetry-like way, to respect the distancing rules that should be implemented, without causing anxiety or fear.

the simple wave-themed sign system designed by studio 5•5 is influenced by the paris blason which depicts a ship sailing on water, as well as by the seine river symbol. in addition, the waves remind parisians of the city’s motto ‘fluctuat nec mergitur!’ which can be loosely translated as ‘beaten by the waves, but not sunk!’.
‘welcome on board of a school’
the signage system can be used for various functions. the colorful signs welcome people into different premises, organize shopping queues outside of malls, and of course remind people on the streets that now everyone must keep 1 meter between them.
‘1 m between us’
