watch issey miyake's docu-film called stories behind homme plissé

back in 2013, issey miyake launched home plissé issey miyake with the idea of liberating men from traditional clothing. designed for practical use, the clothes have been created based on miyake’s research and development on pleating since 1988, conveying a sense of beauty and ease in their form.

in july 2013, just four months after the launch, issey miyake staged a one-time-only event featuring the aomori university men’s rhythmic gymnastics team. the performance was titled flying bodies, soaring spirits, and it was an unprecedented genre of spectacle to mark the birth of the brand, with miyake designing the costumes himself.

in 2019, home plissé issey miyake was ready to embark on a new stage and headed out to paris in order to reach more people with two performance projects: playground at the centre pompidou in january and then a walk in the park at the place des vosges in june. both performances started from nothing with the aim of opening up to a new horizon, resulting in an unimagined fruition.

issey miyake has released a documentary film titled stories behind homme plissé— which you can watch on the video above — that tells how these three performances were realized, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look into the creative process and choreographic direction of the performances. the film shows how the performers, encouraged all through endless rehearsals, carry on running, jumping and dancing.
