Mythic computer introduces its custom apollo collection

A launch has taken over at Mythic Computer with the release of its first publicly available series, the Apollo Collection, all encased in either walnut, cherry, or maple wood. The custom Apollo computers are limited to 27 pieces, with each piece handcrafted only upon order at the Mythic workshop in Ojai, California. Three parts make up the Apollo Collection: the main body, aka the computer, a portable screen as the keyboard is detached from the body, and a display stand that is attached and can be removed magnetically.

Keegan McNamara is the mastermind behind Mythic Computer. The one-man atelier hasn’t announced yet if mixing the wood is possible—for instance, walnut for the main body and maple for the keyboard—but what’s sure is the inclusion of a full-grain, vegetable-tanned, Tuscan leather palm rest sitting just below the mechanical keys. A few custom-printed circuit boards make up the Apollo Collection, along with a Framework motherboard.

‘Those include I/O via three USB-C ports, the mechanical keyboard, and the keyed power switch. The portable screen is a 13.3-inch 4K AMOLED display,’ Keegan McNamara shares with designboom. Even the operating system is custom, based on the Linux kernel. Apps typically found on a computer are present, including a web browser, notes app, email client, command line, code editor, WiFi, Bluetooth, and the like.

There are other design features of Mythic Computer’s custom Apollo Collection apart from the custom wood. Its keyed power switch underlines tactility, complementing the volume and brightness dial, which is made of aluminum. Pay attention to the keyboard, which is hand-tuned and mechanical, producing soft clicks with every press.

Previously, Mythic Computer worked with individual clients to design bespoke devices. Now, Keegan McNamara brings out a series that’s available for anyone, and prices of the limited-edition computers may be given to those who reach out to him through the website.
